Washington [US]Jun 27 (ANI): Ahead of the Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP) centenary next week, a bipartisan group of US lawmakers tabled a resolution condemning China’s human rights violations for the past 100 years.
Under the leadership of Republican Mike Gallagher from Wisconsin, the resolution was introduced in the US House of Representatives on Friday. It lists the CCP’s atrocities against its own people dating back to 1930 and promises to join the “Chinese people in their struggle for freedom,” Fox News reported.
The resolution was supported by Republican Representatives Michael McCaul from Texas, Elise Stefanik from New York, and Brian Fitzpatrick from Pennsylvania. Three members of the Democratic House of Representatives also signed the bill, Ruben Gallego from Arizona, Josh Gottheimer from New Jersey and Jared Golden from Maine.
Lawmakers identified more than 30 human rights violations, ranging from the annexation of Tibet in 1951 to the “grotesque human rights violations” against the Uyghurs in Xinjiang from 2017 onwards.
“The House of Representatives condemns the Chinese Communist Party for 100 years of grave human rights violations, including repression, torture, mass imprisonment and genocide,” Gallagher wrote in the resolution.
The group called on the United States and “like-minded allies and partners to support human rights in the People’s Republic of China,” saying it looks forward to “the day the CCP ceases to exist,” Fox News reported.
China is preparing for massive July 1st celebrations and has closed Tiananmen Square in Beijing, the Forbidden City Palace Complex and other top tourist attractions.
Gallagher previously outlined the importance of uncovering the origins of the coronavirus, referring to the global pandemic as “China’s Chernobyl” in a Fox News article.
The Wisconsin Republican criticized China’s “cover-up” for the virus by refusing to allow an open and transparent investigation into the origins of the virus – and cementing the theory for some that the pandemic was the result of a laboratory leak.
Referring to Zhao Lijian’s hostile reaction to his article, Gallagher said, “This is the CCP’s crazy new propaganda campaign, it started in a laboratory in America.”
China is also looking to reinforce its messages to the world at a time when the United States and Europe are expressing growing concern about the situation in Xinjiang and Hong Kong, NHK World reported.
At a meeting last month, Chinese President Xi Jinping said work must be done to create an image of China as a country that is “humble, trustworthy, loved and respected.” (ANI)
