WASHINGTON, Oct. 20 (Reuters) – President Joe Biden’s candidate for US ambassador to China, Nicholas Burns, said Wednesday that China’s “genocide in Xinjiang,” abuses in Tibet and bullying against Taiwan must stop.

Human rights activists have called China’s treatment of Uighur Muslims in its Xinjiang region “genocide,” a characterization that China rejects.

At his Senate confirmation hearing, Burns, 65, a professional diplomat and former US ambassador to NATO, also said Washington was sticking to its “one-China” policy on Taiwan, but was also right to oppose Beijing’s action that undermine the status quo and that the United States has “tremendous leeway” to deepen security aid.
