CHARLESTON – A Parkersburg man was sentenced Monday to 60 months in prison for a federal gun crime, according to the U.S. Attorney General for the southern district of West Virginia.
Dennis Hutton, 35, admitted to possessing a firearm to promote a drug trafficking crime, US Attorney William S. Thompson said.
Police officers executed a search warrant in a hotel room at the Quality Inn in Mineral Wells on June 28, 2019, Thompson said. During the search, officers found Hutton, digital scales, amounts of suspected methamphetamine and heroin, and a Smith and Wesson .38 caliber revolver, Thompson said.
Hutton admitted to officials that he was selling the drugs to others because of the financial obligations he had, Thompson said. The drugs were sent to the DEA Mid-Atlantic Laboratory and it was confirmed to be methamphetamine and carfentanil, Thompson said.
Hutton also admitted he carried the gun to protect his drugs and the proceeds of his drug dealing, Thompson said.
Thompson praised the investigative efforts of the Drug Enforcement Administration.
US District Judge Joseph R. Goodwin pronounced the verdict. U.S. Assistant Attorney L. Alexander Hamner is pursuing the case.
