North Korea lambasts UNHRC after passing of resolution on country’s human rights situation

The North Korean Foreign Ministry criticized the United Nations Human Rights Council for adopting “arbitrary” Western standards to attack its human rights situation. The State Department criticized the UN Human Rights Council, saying the UN council’s adoption of human rights resolutions violated “certain countries” and violated their rules to treat human rights issues “fairly and equally,” the Yonhap news agency reported.

The State Department’s statement came after the Third Committee of the United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution condemning human rights violations in North Korea for the 17th consecutive year.

The North Korean Foreign Ministry criticized the UN Human Rights Council, citing that it had become a place where they criticized “independent developing countries according to the arbitrary Western standard,” the Yonhap news agency reported, citing the State Department. The ministry claimed in the statement that the special rapporteurs on the human rights situation in North Korea are among the countries that do not follow Western values. In addition, the North Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the special rapporteurs will be selected without discussions with member states.

Tomas Ojea Quintana, the current Special Rapporteur, a lawyer from Argentina, was appointed by the Human Rights Council in 2016 to succeed Marzuki Darusman of Indonesia, who previously served as Special Rapporteur on the human rights situation in North Korea.

In addition, the North Korean State Department said in the statement that the United States and other Western nations must end “coercion” and “tyranny” in order to improve human rights. According to a report by the Yonhap news agency, the UN has been adopting the resolution on North Korea’s human rights issues every year since 2005.

The committee of the Third Committee of the United Nations General Assembly adopted a draft resolution on November 17th on the human rights situation in North Korea. The representative of North Korea had previously rejected the draft resolution of the General Assembly of the United Nations. The North Korean representative alleged that the UNGA’s decision threatened the integrity of his country, according to the United Nations.

The country’s representative also criticized the United States and the European Union for attempting to teach human rights teachings. He refused any interference in the internal affairs of his country and called the draft a “manifestation of politicization”.
