Hammond – Tina Nommay has been appointed as the new acting U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Indiana, replacing Gary Bell, who stepped down to serve as the district clerk, the office said Monday morning.

Bell, who had served as the first US assistant attorney, automatically assumed the top position in December 2020 with the resignation of US attorney Thomas Kirsch.

Nommay, who has served as U.S. assistant attorney in the Fort Wayne Division since 1989, will serve in her new role until the Northern District of Indiana receives its politically appointed, Senate-approved attorney, the office said.

“I will continue the district’s long tradition of seeking justice and protecting the citizens of the Northern District of Indiana by prosecuting those who violate federal law,” said Nommay. “My office will continue to promote public safety across Northern Indiana by coordinating our efforts with federal, state, tribal and local law enforcement agencies, local prosecutors, and civic and community groups.”

In 1992, Nommay moved from the civil to the criminal chamber, where, according to the bureau, she prosecuted a large number of criminal proceedings.

She was promoted in 2012 and served as branch manager for the Fort Wayne Divisions. In this role, she oversaw and advised assistant US attorneys while she was personally involved in a number of complex cases of economic, gun, drug and violent crime.
