Two major Japanese clothing companies have decided to stop using cotton from China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region on charges of forced labor there.
Sanyo Shokai says it won’t be using locally grown cotton in its clothing for next spring and summer, starting the lines.
TSI Holdings said it has stopped using Xinjiang cotton in items for this fall and winter and has no immediate plans to resume it.
The sporting goods company Mizuno and the clothing company World are also pursuing a similar approach.
Meanwhile, Fast Retailing, which operates clothing chain Uniqlo, has set up a team to investigate cotton farmers in the area for possible human rights violations.
