ENABLE GREEN CARD HOLDERS TO VOTE IN MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS: Several elected officials, including a delegation from Brooklyn, have sponsored the city and urged the city to pass Intro 1867, a law which aims to expand the municipal right to vote for green card holders and persons with the right to work. Once passed, New York City would become the nation’s largest city to give non-citizenship immigrants the right to vote so they can choose their local city guides. Sponsors of the Brooklyn Bill, who have joined a growing coalition of religious leaders, DACA beneficiaries, and immigration groups, include Councilors Carlos Menchaca, Brad Lander, Robert E. Cornegy, Jr., Farah N. Louis, Alicka Ampry-Samuel , Stephen T Levin, Laurie A. Cumbo and Mathieu Eugene.
There is currently no federal or state law that explicitly denies undocumented migrants the right to vote at the local level. New York City wouldn’t be the first city to pass such a law; other communities have already passed laws allowing immigrants to vote in their local elections.

HATE CRIME PROTECTION FUNDING: The application period is for $ 25 million in grants to strengthen security at nonprofit facilities at risk of hate crime or attack because of their ideology, belief, or mission This was announced by Governor Kathy Hochul last Thursday. Funding is managed through the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services’ Securing Communities Against Hate Crimes program and enables the purchase of additional security supplies.
For the purposes of state law, hate crimes are those committed against individuals, groups of people or property based on a perception or belief about race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, religion or other characteristics. Because these crimes affect entire communities rather than just intended goals, New York State is tracking these incidents separately from other crimes so trends can be monitored and proactive steps to be taken to prevent them.
