Roberta Clarke (GP)
Attorney Roberta Clarke is the fourth barbadian to be elected to the Inter-American Human Rights Commission.
Clarke was elected today at the 51st General Assembly of the Organization of American States in Washington, DC. She was one of five candidates who applied for three positions.
“It is an honor to be elected as a Barbados candidate to the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights. The Commission’s mandate is to promote and protect human rights for all without discrimination. And their role is even more important now in this time of unprecedented challenges from the COVID pandemic and climate crisis, ”said Clarke.
Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley congratulated Clarke: “This is a significant achievement for Ms. Clarke and Barbados, and provides another unique opportunity for the laws, customs, culture and flair of the Caribbean to see the work of an important hemispheric body that has been in its existence largely reflected Latin America.
“It is also significant in that it came at a time when our world and region are facing new challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic and the climate crisis, which will no doubt raise new human rights concerns for our people.”
Clarke outlined three main ways she would like to contribute to the work of the commission.
She noted: “Accelerating social justice and ending historical inequalities, including those based on gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, social status, skills and migrant status.
“Maintaining the dynamic of enjoying human rights amid COVID-19 by helping states meet their non-negotiable obligations while protecting those who defend human rights.”
Clarke also plans to focus on “new efficiencies through collaboration, continued investment in reducing case backlogs, and strengthening follow-up approaches to case decisions and reporting.”
Sir Henry Forde, Oliver Jackman and Peter Laurie previously served as IACHR commissioners. (PR)
