North Korea has reacted sharply to a UN committee resolution condemning human rights violations in the country.
The resolution adopted on Wednesday was supported by 60 countries, including Japan. It called on Pyongyang to return immediately all those who kidnapped its agents from Japan and South Korea.
A North Korean Foreign Ministry spokesman made a statement on Sunday through the Korean state-run Central News Agency.
The statement said North Korea categorically opposed the resolution of the United States and other “hostile forces” as a “serious violation of sovereignty” intended to damage the country’s prestigious image.
The statement said that countries dealing with North Korea’s “human rights issue” are “invariably the worst human rights abusers,” citing racial discrimination, violence against women and police violence.
It also says that human rights issues are “being used by some countries to carry out their sinister intentions”.
The UN has passed a resolution every year since 2005 condemning the human rights situation in North Korea.
