HOUSTON – 12-7 deficit in the fifth and final set, the University of Houston volleyball program scored eight of the last nine points in their 3-2 win over the state of Mississippi in the first game of the Flo Hyman Collegiate Cup at the Fertitta Center on Friday night .
Senior outside hitter Kortlyn Henderson led the Cougars with five of their 12 kills in the fifth set, including three in a critical period when Houston pushed back into the match. The Waco, Texas native added three blocks that add to the win.
With the win, the Cougars won their fourth game in a row at the start of the season and their third thriller with five sets. The Cougars also beat the Bulldogs 3-1 from the undefeated ranks.
The two teams split the first two sets, with the Cougars heading to a 25-15 win in the first set. Mississippi State rallied to unite the game with a 25-21 win in the fourth set to provide the deciding framework.
Both teams battled to a 4-4 tie through the first eight points before the Bulldogs seemed to take control of the game and won six of the next seven points to take a 10-5 lead. Sania Peties from the state of Mississippi led the way with two kills and a block solo during the rally.
After both schools swapped the next four points, Mississippi had a 12-7 lead and only needed three more points to win the game. Senior mid-blocker Isabel Theut ignited the Cougar rally with a kill, and the second year outside of Grayson Schirpik the momentum continued with an ace.
That was when the Henderson Show began. The senior smashed kills on three of the next four spots to move the Cougars within 13-12, and Houston split the set 13-13 after a Mississippi State offensive error.
After a Bulldog break, junior outside hitter Abbie Jackson and junior middle blocker Rachel Tullos teamed up on a block to give the Cougars the final lead, and Henderson took the win on her 12th and last Kill the night.
Jackson led the way for Houston with 13 kills and added nine digs for a total of six blocks. Theut ended with 11 kills and five block assists. Second year sweeper Kate Georgiades led all players with a career high of 29 digs, while junior defensive specialist Sarah Martinez scored a total of 11 digs.
Mississippi State’s Shania Cromarti led the Bulldogs with 13 kills, while Gabby added 12 kills to Waden in the defeat. Gabby Coulter reached a total of 14 excavations, Lauren Myrick was just in second place with 13 excavations.

TOURNAMENT REVIEW
Mississippi State picked up a 3-0 win over McNeese to open the tournament. Shania Cromartie led the Bulldogs with nine kills, while Lilly Gunter added nine digs to speed Mississippi State.
McNeese bounced back in his second game in a row, claiming a 3-0 win over ULM. Kendall Glueck led the Cowgirls with 10 kills while Lilly Low handled 10 digs and added nine assists to the win.

ABOUT FLO HYMAN
Flo Hyman was one of the most successful student athletes in Houston history. Born in Los Angeles, she joined the Cougars from 1974 to 1976 and immediately made herself felt as one of the first female scholarship holders in school history.
Hyman was a three-time AIAW All-American and was named National Player of the Year in 1976. During her tenure with the Scarlet and White, she led the Cougars to 120 wins and a top five finish at the AIAW National Tournament each season.
After her college career, Hyman embarked on an award-winning international playing career, leading the United States to silver medal at the 1984 Olympics. In 1988 she was inducted into the University of Houston Athletics Hall of Honor.
Hyman died unexpectedly in 1986 at the age of 31. Today she is not only one of the strongest volleyball players, but also a leader who campaigned for upholding the Civil Rights Restoration Act and strengthening Title IX legislation.
NEXT
After the Flo Human Collegiate Cup, the Cougars will compete in the Texas A&M Invitational in College Station, Texas, September 10-11.
This tournament starts at 6pm on September 10th when the Cougars face off against host Aggies and continues on Saturday against UTSA (10am) and Albany (5pm).
From there, the Cougars continue their road swing as they play at the Bama Bash in Tuscaloosa, Ala from September 17-18.
