MEMPHIS, Tennessee – Rhodes College has named Jennifer M. Collins its 21st President following a unanimous vote of the Board of Trustees.
Collins is currently Judge James Noel Dean and Professor of Law at Southern Methodist University in Texas, the college said.
“The appointment of Jennifer Collins is the fortunate result of a lengthy and thorough national search that has attracted interest and applications from an incredibly diverse pool of candidates in and outside higher education,” said Cary., Chair of the Board of Trustees and Co-Chair of the Presidential Search Committee Fowler “What made the selection committee realize that President-elect Collins was the right choice for Rhodes was the combination of her exceptional leadership, her commitment to the promise of the liberal arts, and her passion for the opportunities that Rhodes offers. She will be a welcome presence on campus and a committed Memphis citizen. ”
In a statement released by Rhodes, Collins said she was honored to join the Rhodes community.
Collins has been Dean of the Dedman School of Law at SMU since 2014, where she works with more than 100 faculty members and oversees more than 800 national and international students.
She is responsible for managing an annual budget of $ 49 million; Hiring, supporting and retaining teachers and staff; Fundraising; and managing internal and external communications, according to a Rhodes press release.
Collins joined Wake Forest University (NC) law school in 2003 and was named Associate Provost of Academic and Strategic Initiatives in 2010 and Vice Provost in 2013. As the first law professor in those roles, she was responsible for strategic planning, fostering interdisciplinary partnerships, budgeting, faculty and student recruitment, and enhancing the experience of undergraduate and graduate students at multiple schools, according to the Rhodes press release.
Collins has taught courses in criminal law, criminal procedural law, family law, gender and law, and career development and legal professionalism. She has received numerous awards for outstanding teaching achievements.
Collins worked for the Hon. Dorothy W. Nelson on the US Court of Appeals for the 9th District after graduating from Harvard Law School and worked in a private practice in Washington, DC before joining the US Department of Justice in 1993 as a legal counsel. She then served as the U.S. Assistant Attorney in the District of Columbia District Attorney’s Office from 1994 to 2002. In 2002 she returned to a private law firm at Sidley Austin before moving to Wake Forest.
She is a co-author of Privilege or Punish? Criminal Justice and the Challenge of Family Ties (Oxford University Press 2009). In addition, she has authored many other legal reviews and essays published in the Yale Law Journal, Boston University Law Review, Northwestern University Law Review, and others. Collins’ scholarship focuses on issues affecting families and the criminal justice system, according to the Rhodes publication.
She received her BA, cum laude with honors, in history from Yale University (CT) and her JD, magna cum laude from Harvard University (MA), where she was also an editor for the Harvard Law Review. Collins and her husband Adam Charnes are the parents of Jake, Lily and Sam.
Collins will assume her duties on July 1, 2022, the college announced.
