Your turn, Oct. 24

Now that an administrator in the Carroll Independent School District has said under new Texas law that teachers should teach both sides of the Holocaust, I wonder how teachers will deal with these other “controversial” subjects: the good Hitler did , the positive side of racism, how mass murders are good for communities, the bad side of public education, and how evil are the ideals of the American Revolution.

Wrong with props

Subject: “Vote nearby; our opinion on props 1-4 ”and“ Early voting begins; our attitude towards props. 5-8 “, editorial, Thursday and Friday:

I notice that there is a lack of thought behind some of the Express News recommendations.

Thesis 4: To what extent are additional years of experience important? It is not “raising the bar”. It limits the pool of candidates. For Supreme / Appeals Courts, experience in a Texas court would need to be gained from a Texas licensed attorney, further limiting the pool. Qualifications should be addressed through education.

Proposition 5: Does adding responsibilities to an authority outside of that authority’s jurisdiction make a “fair” choice? Lawyer misconduct can be handled in existing agencies. There is a difference between the wrongdoing of a lawyer and a judge.

Thesis 6: Health facilities have procedures for naming nursing staff. How is it an improvement for lawmakers to tell healthcare institutions how to run their business?

Your editorials are a good re-enactment of the topics of conversation in the Republican Party.

Repair floodplain areas

Subject: “Rescuing the Second Flood Victim,” front page, October 16:

That headline is all too familiar in the San Antonio / Bexar County area. Whenever there is heavy rainfall, some of the “usual” flood-prone areas become death traps. It is discussed whether the victims disregarded warning signs, bypassed barriers, barriers were in place or not, motorists could not see the flood, etc. This has been the case since the invention of the automobile. Why is it going on? How about a bridge over troubled waters in these places or a reorganization of the lanes to avoid these areas altogether?

Too expensive you say? How many low water crossings in the area could be upgraded for the cost of the tax breaks the city and Bexar County recently approved for the new Spurs facility?

Columbus’ damage

“Persona non grata”, it’s your turn, October 15th:

The author’s simple condemnation of “Indigenous Peoples Day” shows what America has become today. Columbus was looking for a sea route to the east in order to get rich through trade with China. He enslaved some of the “Indians” he found and murdered others on the Caribbean islands where he landed. When he returned to Spain, he declared that the people were easy to conquer because they were friendly.

Perhaps the descendants of these “indigenous peoples” cannot hunt for their next meal because all of the open land has been fenced off and taken over by whites and the buffaloes have been slaughtered to make way for whites’ cattle and horses. Regardless of whether it is microwaves or toasters, the author mentions, I am sure that he is shopping for “cheap chinaware” at a Walmart. Thank you, Columbus.

Sometimes simple answers to complex questions and ideas are not enough. I suggest that the author and others with similar views read Howard Zinn’s A People’s History of the United States. You may then have a different view of Columbus and others like him and what they did to my distant ancestors.

Here is a simple explanation: “We were here first and we will stay here, even though you think like you!”

Give a false testimony

It amazes me that the majority of people who claim the election was “stolen” from former President Donald Trump take pride in promoting their Christianity. What bothers me about their preaching is that one of the Ten Commandments is, “You shall not bear false testimony.” Every day we are shot at with “Christians” who give false testimony. News anchor, senators, MPs, congressmen, governors, clergymen, women, the list goes on. I wish these “Christians” would stop lying and at least try to practice their beliefs.
