SPOKANE – On October 7, 2021, Vanessa R. Waldref will be sworn in as the US Attorney for the Eastern District of Washington. In a ceremony held on Thursday afternoon, US District Judge Stanley A. Bastian will take the oath of US Attorney Waldref and make her the chief law enforcement officer for the Eastern District. US

Attorney Waldref was nominated by President Biden on July 26, 2021 and confirmed by the US Senate on September 30, 2021. She will be the first woman to serve as a US attorney for the Eastern District.

US Attorney Waldref said, “It is an honor and a privilege to serve as a US attorney and lead an office of dedicated public servants who work every day for justice and building a safe and strong community in east Washington. I look forward to working closely with our law enforcement partners at the federal, state, local, and tribal levels to serve the Department of Justice’s mission. The US Attorney General will continue to investigate and prosecute the worst offenders in our community and work tirelessly to protect the people of this district from violent crime, child exploitation, fraud, corruption, drug trafficking and environmental degradation. “

US attorney Waldref has spent most of her legal career in the Justice Department. Since 2013, she has served as the U.S. Assistant Attorney and Trial Attorney in the Department of Environment and Natural Resources. An expert in regulatory, labor and environmental law, US attorney Waldref has taught a number of courses as an adjunct professor at the Gonzaga University Law School. She has won numerous awards for teaching and mentoring law students, including the prestigious Myra Bradwell Woman of the Year Award in 2021.

Before joining the Justice Department, US attorney Waldref worked in her own practice at law firms in Spokane and Washington, DC, where she specialized in complex litigation and labor law. She began her legal career as a trainee lawyer with District Judge John D. Bates in the District of Columbia. After graduating from the Gonzaga Prep in Spokane, she graduated Magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa from Georgetown University and Magna cum laude and Order of the Coif from Georgetown University Law School. She is proud to be born and raised in Northeast Spokane.
