Progressive reporters hail the Mexican Supreme Court’s recent abortion ruling as a way to overturn the Texas Anti-Abortion Act.
On Tuesday, Mexico’s Supreme Court voted in favor of decriminalizing abortion after a law found unconstitutional that imposes prison sentences of up to three years on women who have undergone or helped illegal abortions. Although the law applied to the northern state of Coahuila, the verdict will be binding on all other states.
Progressive reporters were quick to celebrate the news and use it to attack the heartbeat recently introduced in Texas.

MSNBC host Joy Reid posted a thread on the news comparing abortion laws to the Fugitive Slave Act.
“So many ironies here… In 1829 Mexico abolished slavery and sparked a battle with English settlers who had come to Texas with slaves in tow. Seven years later, in 1836, the Texas slave traders declared themselves the Republic of Texas, “she tweeted.
She added, “The history of Texas (which they try to suppress in schools is as tied to the deep-seated desire of so-called ‘Christian’ men to control the bodies and procreation of others as is American. Oh. And the fugitive Slave Act became law in 1850. Bounties galore! “
CNN contributor and guest co-host of “The View” Ana Navarro also tweeted, “How many times have we read that Conservative anti-abortionists have been caught asking their pregnant loved one to have an abortion? Go to Mexico. It is the Supreme Court that decriminalizes abortion today. “
CNN guest Keith Boykin tweeted, “Mexico’s Supreme Court is helping your country move forward while America’s Supreme Court tries to put the clock back to the early 20th century.”
Several other progressive reporters cheered the Mexico verdict while beating the United States.
In May, Governor Greg Abbott signed a law banning abortion once a heartbeat is detected, usually around six weeks. The law also allows people to sue clinics that offer illegal abortions or individuals who help with illegal abortions.
On September 1, the US Supreme Court voted 5 to 4 to reject an urgency complaint to prevent the law from being enforced. While the law remained in place, the judges suggested that other challenges may still block the order.

Following the ruling by the US Supreme Court, media experts expressed fear and panic over the possible attack on the Roe v. Wade from 1973.
“There are five judges … who seem like solid voices to overthrow Roe against Wade. We have been accused, those of us who say that Roe falls as Chicken Little, the sky falls, the sky falls. We’ll see, because it sure looks like the sky is falling now, “said CNN legal analyst Jeffery Toobin.
