Professor Hitoshi Nasu, PhD in 2006
With bachelor’s and master’s degrees in his native Japan, Professor Hitoshi Nasu had his future in mind – to stay in Japan and build a career in the Foreign Ministry.
Despite pressures to go this conventional route, Hitoshi made the brave decision to move to Australia to begin further studies, where he graduated from Sydney Law School with a PhD in 2006.
This move has resulted in Hitoshi building a successful academic career in Australia, the UK and the US.
After completing his doctorate with us, Hitoshi taught at the Australian National University. He then moved to Great Britain, where he was Professor of International Law at the University of Exeter.
Today Hitoshi is Professor of Law at the United States Military Academy and Senior Fellow at the Stockton Center for International Law of the United States Naval War College.
We spoke with Hitoshi about his decision to leave the comfort of his home country and forge an unconventional career in science. He shares his experience with further studies abroad and provides valuable insights for those considering an academic career.
