LONDON, July 29 (Reuters) – AstraZeneca is still planning to apply for approval of its COVID-19 vaccine in the United States, although the process is taking longer than expected as it could potentially be used there in the future, its chairman said Pascal Soriot on Thursday.

“The simple answer is that it is an important vaccine. And we believe it could play a role in the future, so we want to apply for it and get approval, ”he said in a briefing when asked why the drug company is seeking approval when the nation has enough supplies to support theirs Population without vaccinating them.

He said the company doesn’t need U.S. approval to add credibility to the shot around the world. Around 170 countries have given the green light for the operation.

“We just want to make sure it’s ready to go when we need it,” he said. (Reporting by Alistair Smout and Pushkala Aripaka; writing by Josephine Mason; editing by Alex Richardson)
