Campaign funding and lobbying compliance

The United States Supreme Court has decided to hear Senator Ted Cruz’s challenge to the Federal Election Commission’s (FEC) ruling that candidates who make loans for their campaign programs can only repay themselves with up to $ 250,000 in funds collected after election day. A federal court ordered the FEC to file a complaint against the National Rifle Association alleging illegal coordination between the group and Donald Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign. (Soo Rin Kim, ABC News)

Colorado: Citizens of Boulder filed a campaign funding complaint against city council candidate Steven Rosenblum alleging that he received an excessive donation in kind in the form of legal research and other assistance related to filing a lawsuit against Boulder Progressives. (Deborah Swearingen, Boulder Daily Camera)

Georgia: Contribution limits for candidates for national office have increased from $ 7,000 to $ 7,600 for primary and general elections, and contribution limits for runoff elections are now $ 4,500 versus $ 4,100. (US News & World Report)

Government Ethics and Transparency

Following questions about stock holdings and transactions disclosed in their financial information, the chiefs of the Federal Reserve Banks of Dallas and Boston announced that they would be leaving their positions. (Jeanna Smialek, New York Times)

Lawyers defending American Democracy filed a complaint with the Disciplinary Committee of the DC Court of Appeals calling for an investigation into former DOJ official Jeffrey Clark. The ethics complaint alleged that Clark had improperly exploited his official position in government by attempting to disrupt the congressional election certification process. new York: Governor Hochul appointed two new members to the Joint Public Ethics Commission (JCOPE), including Jose Nieves as chair, days before the commission convened a special meeting to review former Governor Cuomo’s guidelines on rules of ethics related to his book about the pandemic response. (Bernadette Hogan, New York Post)

Texas: A Dallas city task force published its recommendations for ethics reform in the city, the main proposal being the creation of an independent inspector general to oversee ethics complaints and their enforcement. (Ken Kalthoff, NBC DFW)
