CORE Electric Cooperative Announces Joan Beckner as Chief Legal Officer

CORE Electric Cooperative, an electricity cooperative based in Sedalia, announced the hiring of Joan Beckner as Chief Legal Officer effective October 4th.

Beckner’s experience in the energy industry includes business-oriented legal and technical roles. She specialized in IP / patent / technology disputes, dispute resolution and complex commercial transactions in the Houston office of a large international law firm for 10 years before heading various legal teams at Schlumberger for 5 years. Her strong technical background will enable her to understand our operations and offer practical solutions for managing legal risks.

Beckner earned her BS and MS in petroleum engineering from Stanford University and her JD from the University of Houston Law Center. Most recently, Beckner completed the Professional Certificate Program Financing and Deploying Clean Energy at the Yale Center for Business and the Environment as a member of the 2020-21 cohort.

Change of name from IREA to CORE Electric Cooperative

The Intermountain Rural Electric Association announced in late August that it is now the CORE Electric Cooperative, a name and identity that reflects its mission to provide vital electrical services to thriving communities and its role at the heart of the life of a modern and diverse membership.

The company will continue to be structured as a member-owned, nonprofit cooperative electric utility serving Colorado.

“We’re just a different company today than where we originally were,” said Tim White, CEO, in a statement. “We are at the center – in the heart – of the lives of our members. The churches we serve are in the CORE – the central part – of Colorado. “

CORE, formerly known as IREA, began providing electricity services primarily to rural communities more than 80 years ago. Since then, the company has grown to become the largest power distribution cooperative in Colorado, serving around 300,000 customers. Its 5,000 square mile footprint now extends beyond the mountains and rural areas to some of the fastest growing communities in the United States.

This renaming is not the result of a merger or acquisition. Billing and services will remain the same, so members will not have to take any action or make changes as a result of this renaming.

Member service remains the same at 800-332-9450.
