American democracy only works for the minority: report

American democracy has increasingly turned into a case where a few seize power and decide the outcome of the vote, according to a report released Monday.

The report, entitled “Ten Questions to Ask American Democracy,” was published by the Chongyang Institute for Financial Studies at Renmin University of China.

The report challenged American democracy as it is today, saying it was “a democracy for the minority” and not a system that does justice to the majority.

An analysis of US electoral policy came to the conclusion that the presidential elections had become increasingly dependent on the “key minority”, the so-called “swing states” and “key constituencies”.

In the 2016 presidential election, Republican candidate Donald Trump won the White House with 304 votes, despite Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton receiving 2.8 million more votes.

“The decisive minority is always more decisive than the majority,” says the report.

By examining the practical workings of American politics, the report also concluded that power tends to serve a few wealthy people with capital rather than serving the interests of most voters.

The result agrees with a report by Princeton University and Northwest University, which shows that common people and groups representing the interests of the masses have little independent political influence, while economic elites and organized groups representing business interests have strong Have the ability to control politics.

“… America is less democracy and more oligarchy than we like to think,” says the report, citing Nobel laureate in economics, Paul Krugman.

In monetary policy, American political power has become a tool for the owners of capital. As a result, the will of the people is hardly ever actually realized, the report noted, pointing out that elected US presidents often fail to keep their election promises and do not fulfill the will of the people.

George W. Bush promised to cut government spending and stop sending troops abroad. He gradually started the war in Afghanistan and Iraq and government spending rose sharply. Barack Obama promised to initiate reforms of wealth distribution, including improving corporate tax law and formulating the Buffett Rule. Donald Trump broke 53 percent of his election promises.

“From Bush to Obama to Trump, the presidents are constantly changing, but the will of the people is becoming increasingly difficult to realize. The will of the people must only be mentioned in the election and gradually forgotten by politics after the election,” the report said.
