2020-21 CoSIDA Academic All-District Women At-Large Teams

LAMA-CRUCES, NM – Strong on the pitch, strong in the classroom.

That’s the definition of NM state tennis junior Gavi Kalaga, who learned on Thursday that she was called to the CoSIDA Academic All-District Seven Women’s At-Large Team 2020-21. As an All-District First Team Honoree, Kalaga will advance to the CoSIDA Academic All-America Vote. Academic All-America First, Second, and Third Team Honors will be announced in early August.

Kalaga, who recently completed her third season in an Aggie jersey, is the first NM state tennis player since Sandra Mayr in 2004 to earn a spot on the CoSIDA Academic All-District Women’s At-Large Team. She is also the sole representative of the Western Athletic Conference across all 102 student athletes who have received the honor.

The CoSIDA Academic All District teams are divided into geographic districts in the US and Canada. District Seven includes all of the NCAA Division I colleges and universities in Colorado, Idaho, Kansas, Nebraska, New Mexico, Nevada, Oklahoma, and Texas. Kalaga is the second NM State undergraduate athlete to earn the 2020-21 CoSIDA Academic All-District Awards after Austin Reeves received a spot on the Academic All-District Seven Football Team from football.

In the 2020/21 season, Kalaga was one of the Aggies’ most consistent players as the team worked their way up to the WAC tournament championship game. Kalaga built a record of 10-7 (4-2 in the WAC game) in individual fights over the course of the year and ended the year as the team leader in individual wins. Together with teammate Harsha Challa in a double game, Kalaga played up to a 9-5 (4-2 in the WAC game).

As two-time WAC individual athlete of the week in 2021, Kalaga also received the All-WAC Honorable Mention (singles) and WAC All-Tournament Team (doubles) awards after completing her latest campaign.

On the school side, Kalaga has a perfect 4.0 GPA while majoring in government with minors in both business administration and business law. She is one of 31 student athletes on the CoSIDA Academic All-District Women’s At-Large Team who have 4.0 GPAs.
