Privacy is a basic, basic human right. It is also an endangered right. New digital technologies haunt and question us all in this age of surveillance capitalism (Zuboff, 2018). The digital economy regards every click, search, or the like as an asset to be monetized. Our lives reflected in cyberspace are being plundered for behavioral data for a system that converts our freedom into profit. We are tacitly domesticated to accept that decision-making rights disappear before we even know a decision is to be made.

“A new awareness, shaped by a human rights-based approach, which regards each and every“ netizen ”as a dignified moral being who deserves respect, is required. Otherwise, our connectivity will continue to provide a perverse mix of empowerment that is inextricably linked with mitigation, “said Carlos Moreira, Founder and CEO of WISeKey.

The story goes on

For these reasons, WISeKey and the OISTE Foundation – based on the various resolutions of the UN General Assembly and the Human Rights Council on the protection and promotion of the right to privacy in the digital age – have set up a body that, among other things, deals with the following topics:

  • Identify and clarify principles, standards and best practices to promote and protect the human right to privacy

  • Strengthening the principles of non-arbitrariness, legality, legality, necessity and proportionality in state communications surveillance.

  • Ensure that profiling, automated decision-making and machine learning technologies are carried out in accordance with the agreed guarantees and do not impair the exercise of human rights

  • Introduce a gender perspective and ensure effective domestic oversight and remedies for violations of the human right to privacy

  • Addressing the problem of personal data management: Often individuals do not give their free, express and informed consent to the re-use, sale or multiple resale of their personal data

  • Addressing the problem of the impact of artificial intelligence on human rights, with particular focus on examples of discrimination and bias

WISeKey and the OISTE Foundation signed the International Principles on the Application of Human Rights to Communications Surveillance right after its introduction at the 24th session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva in 2013.
