“I know this is going to be difficult for a lot of people, but by reducing your contacts in the workplace you are helping to slow down the transmission.”

As of this Friday, the legal requirement to wear a face covering will be extended to theaters and cinemas, confirms Mr Johnson.

“Of course there will be exceptions where it is not practical, for example when eating, drinking, exercising and singing.”

The NHS Covid Pass will also be mandatory for unseated indoor spaces with more than 500 people and unseated outdoor venues with more than 1,000 people.

A double vaccination or a negative lateral flow test would meet that requirement, added Mr Johnson, and this rule will go into effect in a week.
