Most Americans support Biden’s expanded child tax credit, our research finds. But there are caveats.

The extended version of Biden is more generous, in part because it’s fully refundable. In addition to sending monthly checks from July through December, the American Rescue Plan also increased the benefit from $ 2,000 to $ 3,600 for children under 6 and to $ 3,000 for children 6-17 years old. According to Columbia University’s Center on Poverty & Social Policy, as of September 2021, the expanded child tax break saved 3.4 million children from poverty and allowed families to pay for basic things like food, housing, clothing, and education.
