It is certainly a notable number, but it becomes more notable when you consider the broader context of the pandemic. From the virus’ first appearance in early 2020 to the peak of deaths in mid-April this year, New York was the state where most people died from Covid-19. During that period, 17,131 people in the state succumbed to the disease, according to the Washington Post. By the peak on Wednesday (excluding more than 1,200 deaths reported by Florida on Thursday), Florida had recorded three deaths for four New Yorkers recorded prior to that first peak.
